BETTA 8x10.jpg

My current body of work creates an escape from the mundane thoughts of everyday life through illustrations. My drawings and paintings are a tool to better understand my personal demons by giving them form. These are primarily my struggles with depression and frustration with current events. There are two common subjects within my works. The first is the Betta which reflects both self-destruction and beating impossible odds. The other symbol is the dragon, a symbol of the paradoxical relationship between fire as both a tool and a destructive force. In my works I study these dueling perspectives and their relationship with humanity.

I work with Oil, Digital painting and ink primarily. Use of these media is handled separately, despite experimentation, these media are better understood in isolation as they are not the most compatible. I favor small works and am fond of scientific illustration and old medieval bestiaries and I work to reflect that in my work. For my paintings I have a heavy focus on composition and color choice for my storytelling, I favor duo-tone and three-tone images and make extensive use of muddier colors, fog, and mist to create a dreamlike fairy-tale atmosphere.
